Bon Secours St. Francis Medical Center

Chesterfield County residents are only minutes away from any of the metropolitan area's medical facilities. The American Medical Association has designated the area as a prime medical center, a designation given only to cities where every type of medical care and surgery is provided. There are more than 3,500 physicians and 17 acute care and specialty hospitals with nearly 4,000 staffed beds.

VCU Medical Center, founded in 1838, is one of the nation's premier academic medical centers. MCV Hospitals is the teaching hospital component of the VCU Medical Center, which also includes outpatient clinics and MCV Physicians, a 600-physician faculty group practice.

The 779-bed VCU Medical Center is a regional referral center for the state and is the region's only Level I Trauma Center. The center offers nearly 200 specialty areas, many of national and international note. In addition to multidisciplinary centers for cancer, cardiology, neurosurgery and transplantation, the center offers virtually every form of contemporary medical service. In particular, the medical center has received international recognition for early diagnosis and treatment of chest pain and strokes, organ transplant, head and spinal cord trauma research, burn and wound healing, neonatal intensive care and genetic research, as well as cancer research, treatment and rehabilitation.

Bon Secours St. Francis Medical Center opened its doors to receive patients on September 2, 2005. A 245,000-square-foot facility, St. Francis offers state-of-the-art medical and surgical services; 130 private patient rooms; six all digital surgical suites; a complete line of women’s health services, including a 12-bed birthing center and neonatology on site, 24/7, 365 days a year; 24-hour emergency care for all ages and all digital radiology and diagnostics. The Johnston-Willis Campus of CJW Medical Center is also located in Chesterfield County. With 748 beds and two medical campuses, CJW Medical Center is one of the largest facilities in the nation's largest hospital system, HCA. Each campus provides a wide range of services with specialty programs established at one hospital or the other. Both campuses have state-designated trauma centers.

The Chesterfield County Health Department has a staff of nurses, sanitarians and health officers who provide clinics, school nurses and environmental health programs. The Chesterfield County Mental Health Center provides county residents with a place to receive professional help in their own community, including such services as outpatient assistance, crisis intervention, and a substance abuse program.
